Vincent Van Gogh died on July 29, Although he suffered throughout his life from mental illness and died tragically at the age of 37, Van Gogh created more than 2, works of art, a considerable achievement for any artist, and especially for one active for only a decade. His paintings continue to exert a powerful influence on contemporary culture, the art market, and our imaginings about the artist himself.
Wheat Field with Crows uses the double square canvases that Van Gogh used exclusively in the final weeks of his life. The painting is extremely dramatic, conveying intense feelings, and is one of his most haunting and elemental works. Van Gogh did not mention this painting in his letters, so the exact date of completion is not clear, but many now agree that it was not his last painting.
