The line for the title occurs during the hurricane. At this point in the novel we are introduced to the major conflict of Man vs. This conflict proves once again that man can't win. In this conflict Tea Cake tries to outsmart, outrun and outwit nature, but in the end Nature wins by ultimately proving fatal. It is also representative of the folkloric nature of Hurston's writing. They speak of god as Ol' Massa and relate to him in a narrative story like fashion. This shows her anthropological background where she studied the way uneducated African Americans used story telling to help them understand the world because that was the only way they knew.
The novel explores main character Janie Crawford's "ripening from a vibrant, but voiceless, teenage girl into a woman with her finger on the trigger of her own destiny. Set in central and southern Florida in the early 20th century, the novel was initially poorly received. Since the late 20th century, it has been regarded as a seminal work in both African-American literature and women's literature. Southern states enacted new constitutions and legislation from to that effectively disenfranchised most African Americans. Jim Crow laws were passed, and most African Americans lost their political representation. Tenant farming and sharecropping systems constituted the de facto re-enslavement of African Americans in the South, where Hurston's novel is based.
