I Am the Only Running Footman (Richard Jury, #8) by Martha GrimesNew Scotland Yard superintendent Richard Jury is convinced its more than coincidence when two beautiful young women are found strangled to death with their own scarves -- one in Devon, the second outside a fashionable Mayfair pub. Both women were as strikingly similar in life as they were in death. Neither had enemies that Jury can find. Now, somewhere in the night, a killer is biding his time, beckoning Jury and Devons local divisional commander, Brian Macalvie, down an elusive trail of tragic family secrets and even more fatal lies....
Dark Souls 3 - Miracles Only Run (Part 7) FINAL
Britain's strangest pub names
In a rainy ditch in a Devon wood, a hitchhiker is found dead. Devon policeman Brian Macalvie is convinced that the two murders are connected. And thus, in his eighth case, Richard Jury is drawn into the so-called Porphyria killings. A particularly elusive pair of murders. From the streets of London to the village of Somers Abbas, Jury and Macalvie are joined by the stolid if hypochondriac Sergeant Wiggins and the reluctant Melrose Plant.
In Charles Street, Mayfair there remains evidence of the last vestiges of Georgian competitive running with a tentative link to the cabbies of their day. The pub was once called the Running Horse and frequented by the footmen who were in service to the households of Mayfair. As the fashion for footmen dwindled one bought the pub and renamed it after himself. London in the 17th century was a pretty chaotic place, narrow streets, overcrowded, animals, carts and numerous other obstructions. The aristocracy would also like to pitch their footmen in a race with others from wealthy households. After The Great Fire of London many streets were clearer and the need for a running footman lessened, although they were then employed as house servants.
