Oedipus the King (BBC 1986)

Towering over the rest of Greek tragedy, Sophocles' The Three Theban Plays are among the most enduring and timeless dramas ever written.
Sophocles

THE THREE THEBAN PLAYS: ANTIGONE; OEDIPUS THE KING; OEDIPUS AT COLONUS

Sophocles is one of three classical Greek tragedians whose plays have survived. Sophocles wrote plays but only seven survive intact. He is said to have won between dramatic competitions in Athens. In comparison, Aeschylus won competitions sometimes placing second to Sophocles while Euripides won only 4 or 5. But Sophocles wrote the plays not as a unified trilogy but as parts of different sets. Thebes was a city founded by Cadmus and an important part of ancient Greek mythology.

His first plays were written later than or contemporary with those of Aeschylus , and earlier than or contemporary with those of Euripides. Sophocles wrote over plays [3] during the course of his life, but only seven have survived in a complete form: Ajax , Antigone , Women of Trachis , Oedipus Rex , Electra , Philoctetes and Oedipus at Colonus. He competed in 30 competitions, won 24, and was never judged lower than second place.

Greek theater was very different from what we call theater today. It was, first of all, part of a religious festival. To attend a performance of one of these plays was an act of worship, not entertainment or intellectual pastime. But it is difficult for us to even begin to understand this aspect of the Greek theater, because the religion in question was very different from modern religions. The god celebrated by the performances of these plays was Dionysus, a deity who lived in the wild and was known for his subversive revelry. The worship of Dionysus was associated with an ecstasy that bordered on madness. Dionysus, whose cult was that of drunkenness and sexuality, little resembles modern images of God.
