8 to Be Great: The 8-Traits That Lead to Great Success by Richard St. John

I bought this book after watching videos by its author Richard St. John on YouTube. He has done very remarkable jobs by doing 500 interviews with successful people and extracting them into this book. Before buying this book, I was wondering what qualities that make people successful. It came to my mind the answer was between soft skills and hard skills. Sometimes I heard from people around me that soft skills were much more important than hard skills. Deep in my thought I would disagree with that opinion but I couldnt support my disagreement. Until I found this book and finished reading it, the 8 traits explained in this book enlightened my mind.
The author puts 8 traits (passion, work, focus, push, ideas, improve, serve, and persist) as the heart of success. The other skills including soft and hard skills are considered secondary. By maintaining these 8 traits, no matter what fields you are in, you can become a successful person in a field youre working on. The explanation about each trait is practical and also makes sense. Some explanations give you new insights and fix false intuitions that lead you to be unsuccessful. You can apply those 8 traits into yourself and that is what Im going to do.
However, after reading this book I need to think a little bit and make connections between these 8 traits. One thing I consider extreme in this book is about working hard. If you want to be a successful person you have to work very hard and forget about yourself and your family. Perhaps, because this books perspective is about successful at your job, not others. This is very surprising to me. In my opinion, having a great family and good health is a success. Raising children and supporting them to become successful people is also a success. In the chapter about persist, you can find that you cant have success and life balance at the same time, so you have to make a choice. But, you can switch between life balance and job success repeatedly so at the long run you can achieve life balance and job success altogether.

Richard St. John Each person's path to success may be unique, but there are many commonalities among the world's most successful people. John conducted interviews with more than highly successful people, from the likes of Bill Gates and Richard Branson to Martha Stewart and Ben Cohen, the cofounder of Ben and Jerry's ice cream. John entered transcriptions of every interview into a database in order to analyze more than possible success factors. He found they all shared eight traits, which he calls the "8 to be great" because "they're the foundation for success and greatness in any field. Passion tops the list because "if you love what you're doing, it will be so much easier to develop the other seven success traits," St.
