The English short-story writer Hector Hugh Munro , better known by his pen name Saki a pen name he probably borrowed from The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam , is one of the wittiest and funniest writers of short fiction in all of English literature — arguably the not-so-missing link between Oscar Wilde and P. Yet his work remains less widely read and appreciated than it deserves, in our view.

The inspiration for the pen name "Saki" is unknown, it may be based upon a character in a poem or on a South American monkey. Given Munro's intellect, wit, and mischevious nature it's possible it was based on both simultaneously. As a writer, Munro Saki was a master of the short story form and is often compared to O. Henry and Dorothy Parker. Benson shares his sardonic style. Munro was born in Akyab, Burma now known as Myanmar in In while she was on a trip to England, his mother Mary was charged by a cow.

Besides his short stories which were first published in newspapers, as was customary at the time, and then collected into several volumes , he wrote a full-length play, The Watched Pot , in collaboration with Charles Maude; two one-act plays; a historical study, The Rise of the Russian Empire the only book published under his own name ; a short novel, The Unbearable Bassington ; the episodic The Westminster Alice a parliamentary parody of Alice in Wonderland ; and When William Came , subtitled A Story of London Under the Hohenzollerns , a fantasy about a future German invasion and occupation of Britain. Her nephew Cecil William Mercer later became a well-known novelist, under the name of Dornford Yates. In , on a home visit to England, Mary Munro was charged by a cow, and the shock caused her to miscarry.
