Crow Country by Kate Constable

From the author of the Chanters of Tremaris series comes  a contemporary time travel fantasy, grounded in the landscape of Australia

Beginning and ending, always the same, always now. The game, the story, the riddle, hiding and seeking. Crow comes from this place; this place comes from Crow. And Crow has work for you.

Sadie isnt thrilled when her mother drags her from the city to live in the country town of Boort. But soon she starts making connections—with the country, with the past, with two boys, Lachie and Walter, and, most surprisingly, with the ever-present crows. When Sadie is tumbled back in time to view a terrible crime, she is pulled into a strange mystery.

Can Sadie, Walter, and Lachie figure out a way to right old wrongs, or will they be condemned to repeat them? A fantasy ground in mythology, this novel has the backing of a full consultative process on the use of indigenous lore.

At 13, Sadie is lonely and disgruntled after her mother Ellie's sudden decision to move back to her family's home town in Central Victoria. Bored and isolated in the small country town she becomes intrigued by Ellie's stow of a nearby private lake where she and her cousins used to go yabbying. Sadie sets out to find it and is dismayed to discover the lake has dried up to a scum of yellow mud dotted with ruins of old buildings and rotted trees from the time before the valley was drowned. Among the debris is a mysterious ring of ancient carved stones. The area is infested with crows--an eerie place. Thoroughly disconcerted, she hears a crow address her, declaring this to be the place of the crows and they have work for her, implying the existence of a past mystery that somehow involves her and that seems doomed to repeat itself.

Thank you! After moving to the country, an Australian teen travels back in time to right old wrongs involving her family and a threatened aboriginal site. When the current white owner of the land wants to misuse it as his ancestor did, Sadie must prevent history from repeating itself. This neatly structured story relies on aboriginal folklore, enduring racial biases, betrayed friendships and a perceptive heroine who knows the difference between right and wrong.
