The Black Cat and Other Stories by David Wharry

Edgar Allen Poe weaves words until they coil around you without observation that you are under his spell. This short story is a read now one from the Goodreads free ebook section and one I had not read before even though a long term fan of Poe.

Somewhat darker than some of his tales, this one is quite graphic and disturbing and if you are an animal lover some scenes may disturb (they did me). We experience the descent of a mind, the changing of a mans heart. A house full of loved pets becomes a torment too much too bear.

Such a clever story, but unnerving and uneasy to read. Even so, we are mesmerised by Poes way with words, almost poetic in their nature. Its a very short but intense story ideal to be read at night, by candlelight, under a full moon.

The ending I found to be excellent, unexpected and victorious.

As for the cat? Well to quote from another of Poes works, we shall never know - Nevermore, Nevermore.

Hiss, Spit, Purr, Meow.

4 paw print stars from Booklover Catlady for this dark and interesting tale from one of the true masters of early horror, suspense, dark writings.

Poe Jeffrey Combs is a writing slump which means that he is also in a finance slump. All of the stress that the circumstances of his life have created is then topped off with the fact that Mr. Poe is an alcoholic. While trying to write a story for a local publication, he becomes increasingly obsessed with the annoyances of the family cat. What follows is a story of murder, intrigue, and insanity that reaches a crescendo of mass proportion. Thoughts: Wonderful, fantastic, marvelous and all of the other civilized words of adornment should be applied when describing The Black Cat.
