The Adventures of the Wilderness Family by Martin QuinnGreat story. This is one I read as a kid and I saw the film as well. This was so much fun and I wish..really wish..there was more then one other review because its a great story about a Suburban family who decides to pack up and move into the Wilderness.
Ever had the urge to do that? I have wanderlust so I sure have. This is a fun, all around well written terrific read and you do not have to be a kid to enjoy it. Just let the sweeping wilderness take you away..highly recommended. This is an excellent book.

The Adventures of the Wilderness Family
Togetherness should be synonomous with the holiday season, and "The Adventures of the Wilderness Family," which arrived at the Guild and Embassy Theaters yesterday is charmingly appropriate for the family and the season. Perhaps only curmudgeons over the age of 8 would find it unlikely that a black bear would take on a silent grizzly or that a devoted dog would hold off an entire wolfpack in defense of this family. But it's an ideally wholesome clan, and both wilderness and fauna are photogenic and endearing. The family's season in the wilds, a program note indicates, stems from a true story of escape from illness, smog and other traumas of Los Angeles to the pioneer life in the lake-studded, forest high country of the Pacific Northwest. In this case, the youthful father and mother and their little boy and girl take to their new, gorgeously rugged terrain like Sioux.
The filming location was the Gunnison National Forest in the state of Colorado. Skip Robinson is a construction worker who lives with his family in Los Angeles , California. Concerned about his daughter's health and the welfare of his family, as well as despising his job, Skip grows tired of the city life and decides to move his family to the Rocky Mountains with no plans to ever return due to the smog and congestion. After moving his wife Pat and two children, eleven-year-old Jennifer and seven-year-old Toby to the wilderness and then building their own cabin near a large lake, they settle in to find out that their new environment isn't always as peaceful as it may appear. From the start, the Robinson family seemed to be adjusting to their new life in the Colorado wilderness. A few days after finishing building their new cabin, Toby and Skip go out hunting one morning with their dog , Crust and succeed in catching a grouse for the family dinner. Later that day, while climbing along the rocky slopes of a large hill, Skip and his son almost get caught in a deadly landslide.
