Power and Love: A Theory and Practice of Social Change by Adam KahaneWar is no way to resolve our most problematic group, community, and societal issues, but neither is a peace that simply sweeps our problems under the rug.
To create lasting change we have to learn to work fluidly with two distinct, fundamental drives that are in tension: power—the single-minded desire to achieve one’s solitary purpose; and love—the drive towards unity. They are seemingly contradictory but in fact complimentary. As Martin Luther King put it, “Power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic.” Using revealing stories from complex situations he has been involved in all over the world—the Middle East, South Africa, Europe, India, Guatemala, the Philippines, Australia, Canada and the United States—Kahane reveals how to dynamically balance these two forces. Just as when we are toddlers we learn to shift from one foot to the other to move ourselves forward, so we can learn to shift back and forth between power and love in order to move society forward.

Power & Love conference
Many times I have heard priesthood leaders give thanks for the sustaining faith of those they serve. From the emotion in their voices, you know their gratitude is deep and real. And it is also to encourage you to exercise and grow in that power to sustain others with your faith. Before you were born, you demonstrated such power. Think back to what we know of the spirit world before we were born. Our Heavenly Father presented a plan for His children. We were there.
As children of God, we are called to live in the peace, joy, and love of the Holy Trinity. We remain stuck in old patterns of behavior or ways of thinking that leave us feeling lonely, anxious and even hopeless. The good news is that we can be free! The Holy Spirit can lift us out of despair and give us a renewed sense of purpose. The Power and Purpose Conference will introduce you to and draw you deeper into relationship with the Holy Spirit and empower you to live in freedom and joy. This conference gave me great courage to live my faith, share my faith, and love the faith into the hearts of others.
