Just Love: A Framework for Christian Sexual Ethics by Margaret Farley

This long-awaited book by one of American Christianitys foremost ethicists proposes a framework for sexual ethics whereby justice is the criterion for all loving, including love that is related to sexual activity and relationships. It begins with historical and cross-cultural explorations, then addresses the large questions of embodiment, gender, and sexuality, and finally delineates the justice framework for sexual ethics.
Though Just Loves particular focus is Christian sexual ethics, Farleys framework is broad enough to have relevance for multiple traditions. Also covered are specific issues in sexual ethics, including same-sex relationships, marriage and family, divorce and second marriage, celibacy, and sex and its negativities.

The Truth about the Catholic sex abuse crisis that no one is saying.

No justice for Margaret Farley and 'Just Love'

Margaret A. She was Gilbert L. Farley is the first woman appointed to serve full-time on the Yale School board, along with Henri Nouwen as its first Catholic faculty members. She is a past president of Catholic Theological Society of America. Farley's controversial book, Just Love , brought criticism and censure from the Holy See , specifically the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith for moral views which oppose the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church , but her book and views has received both support and endorsement from the groups Leadership Conference of Women Religious and the Catholic Theological Society of America.

Only weeks after taking a broad swipe at the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has returned to its more typical routine of taking aim at individual theologians. The latest target is Mercy Sr. On Monday morning, the CDF published a notification that states Just Love does not reflect the official teaching of the Magisterium and, therefore, "cannot be used as a valid expression of Catholic teaching, either in counseling or formation, or in ecumenical or interreligious dialogue. As Farley herself said in her response to the notification, Just Love "was not intended to be an expression of current official Catholic teaching, nor was it aimed specifically against this teaching. It has become abundantly clear that, particularly in matters related to the pelvic zone, the hierarchy is not interesting in exploring questions or engaging in dialogue.

Margaret A. Farley's Just Love: A Framework for Christian Social Ethics has been the subject of much discussion and controversey following the announcement by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in June that the book "contained erroneous propositions, the dissemination of which risks grave harm to the faithful. Farley, is the product of years of experience, reflection, scholarship and wisdom. This is an important message in a time in which sexual abuse and violence are rampant, and the Catholic Church has failed to protect children from sexual exploitation, while campaigning against the unions that many gays and lesbians view as essential expressions of their identities. It is just as important a message for a culture, like ours, that often reduces sexual morality to freedom and enjoyment, and regards commitment as an ideal or a luxury.

Jan 22, In Just Love, Farley seeks not so much to persuade as to invite readers to a way of thinking that can move the conversation about sexual.

A Framework for Christian Sexual Ethics

Farley's book, Just Love: A Framework for Christian Sexual Ethics , takes positions justifying divorce and remarriage, homosexuality, and, yes, masturbation, that are out of step with official Catholic teaching. The content of the Vatican reprisal can be fairly summed up as a series of declarations that Farley's proposals on these topics "are in direct contradiction with Catholic teaching". What may be news to some, however, is the extent to which US Catholic opinion supports Farley. Masturbation is also of concern to the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Farley's book spends only one paragraph on it, and it has not been deemed significant enough by pollsters to provide me with any recent data on Catholic attitudes.
