United: Thoughts on Finding Common Ground and Advancing the Common Good by Cory BookerThis is absolutely the book you write a decade or so before you run for President. It does all the things it politically should do in order to introduce him to people who have never heard of him and answer questions about his life for those who have been following his public image for a while. If youve read Barack Obamas books, youll recognize a lot of the same techniques for painting a picture of a flawed, but overall good man. Booker casually confirms his oft-questioned heterosexuality with an anecdote about a woman he briefly and unreasonably fell for. He explains the ineffectiveness he showed on Newarks city council, as well as Mayor Sharpe Jamess vendetta against him (which is effing BANANAS, btdubs). He is appropriately critical of his own ego and shortcomings. He name checks God and the Bible. He accentuates his idealism, showing how it could be a weakness at times, but ultimately pointing to how much he cares about people. Having followed Bookers life and career for a decade or so and not really needing to be persuaded of his politics and character, mostly, this was an interesting glimpse at the events and ideas that led a fairly privileged kid from the burbs to intentionally move to the wrong side of the tracks and become a politician. #CoryBooker4PresidentWheneverHeFeelsLikeRunning

Read Alan Sepinwall's review of "Brick City". Between Memorial Day and Election Day of , Levin and partner Mark Benjamin teamed up with executive producer Forest Whitaker to document the struggles and triumphs of Newark residents from the upper floors of City Hall to the streets of the Central Ward. With unfettered access to the mayor and police director, as well as Bloods barbecues, the film aims to provide a composite sketch of the everyday struggles of Newark life in a narrative that rivals fictional treatments such as "The Wire" -- to which many critics compare the series.

Shot over several months in and climaxing with the election of Barack Obama, the filmmakers are understandably enamored with Booker, but so much so that this sobering look at urban strife at times plays like an infomercial for the pol. Adding a human face to the proceedings, the documentary also follows Jayda, a Blood gang member who is trying to turn her life around by mentoring youths as she prepares to have a baby with her boyfriend Creep, who belongs to the Crips; and the principal seeking to maintain order at the local high school amid the nagging threat of violence.
