That first time I had followed the diet, I lost 35 lbs. and was never hungry or unhappy about my meal choices. But then the holidays came and I decided I would go off the diet for the duration. That was a big mistake, because I just couldnt bear to go back on it. Like most failed dieters, I gained back all the weight and more.
While cruising the internet, I discovered that the current form of the Atkins diet is nothing like the original. The Atkins name is now owned by a big corporation that has profits as it focal point. And they also want to sell food products that taste good enough that people will buy them. And they want the diet to be as palatable as possible so that more people will stay on the diet and buy more of their products. Thats not to say the diet wont work. It just might not work as well.
The most helpful source I found was a forum dedicated to discussing the original 1972 version, its differences from the newer versions and and acting as a support group for those following the old-style, in other words, following this 1972 edition of Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution.
The main difference will be the starting point of the diet and its restrictions, the different levels for adding certain foods, and the instruction to add carbohydrates at a rate of 5 grams a week until you find the number of grams that you stop losing weight. Then you backtrack that count to lose weight at the rate you would like. From the forum, it seems that everyone has their own style of following this original version, with varying results. Some people yo-yo, some have lost a tremendous amount of weight, and some dont seem to go anywhere.
I found the book inspiring and informative. Its shortcomings mainly consist of contradictions on what is a acceptable food or a forbidden food at each level. He isnt always consistent.
