Das Boot by Lothar-Günther Buchheim

It is autumn, 1941, and a German U-boat commander and his crew set out on yet another hazardous patrol in the Battle of the Atlantic. Over the coming weeks they must brave the stormy waters of the Atlantic in their mission to seek out and destroy British supply ships. But the tide is beginning to turn against the Germans in the war for the North Atlantic. Their targets now travel in convoys, fiercely guarded by Royal Navy destroyers, and when contact is finally made the hunters rapidly become the hunted. As the U-boat is forced to hide beneath the surface of the sea a cat-and-mouse game begins, where the increasing claustrophobia of the submarine becomes an enemy just as frightening as the depth charges that explode around it. Of the 40,000 men who served on German submarines, 30,000 never returned. Written by a survivor of the U-boat fleet, Das Boot is a psychological drama merciless in its intensity, and a classic novel of World War II.

The submarine pen in La Rochelle, France was built in in Like the ones at Saint-Nazaire and Lorient, its colossal berths, titanic dimensions and worn concrete today give the structure the appearance of a relic of prehistoric times. Its extreme dimensions and sturdiness—the roof alone is more than 20 feet thick—made it impossible to destroy after the war. The structure sits around today relatively unchanged—an enduring monument of World War II, and a convenient backdrop for telling stories about it. Every few decades, it seems, the German film industry sends a few hundred people in Nazi uniforms to play around in one of these structures. The creators of the new version on Hulu returned to the submarine pen, for a send-off of yet another U-boat. The Hulu version mines the novel and its sequel Die Festung , but its story beats feel very s the series is written by Tony Saint and Johannes Betz, the director is Andreas Prochaska.

New crew. This allows the thrilling show to stand on its own two feet — and it does so with impeccable taste and self-possession. The opening episodes, set largely in La Rochelle in western France, establish a strange bunch of heroes who seem motivated less by moral fortitude than by chance, circumstance and survival instincts. Vicky Krieps , who was so good in Phantom Thread that she out-acted Daniel Day-Lewis, is Simone Strasser, a Nazi translator of French origins whose identity sits uncomfortably between the two. When her brother Frank, a radio operator, is sent on a mysterious mission at sea, he insists she take his place at a clandestine night-time exchange in the darkened cloisters of a church. Naturally, it does not play out as planned — there are eight episodes to sustain, after all — but Strasser, whose loyalties are not yet clear, is dragged into the murky world of the French resistance under the noses of her Nazi bosses. Hoffman, the fast-tracked son of a famed war hero, struggles to impress even the slightest bit of authority on his crew.

P lunderers of TV past will always run into opposition. Never go back, some say, and you can see the argument. Not that this has ever stopped the industry from remixing the classics. The aim is to engage a new audience with a known winner while keeping fans of the original onboard. This is no easy task. Fortunately, they nail it.

  1. Das Boot is a German submarine film written and directed by Wolfgang Petersen, Columbia Pictures released both a German version and an English- dubbed version in the United States theatrically, but the film's German version.

  2. The cable and subscription streaming business lately seems determined to reinterpret an old saying: These days, history repeats itself, first as a tragedy, and then as a multi-part prestige TV drama.
