Well Be Here for the Rest of Our Lives: A Swingin Show-Biz Saga by Paul Shaffer

From Paul Shaffer, lifelong music junkie, hipster, and longtime leader of David Lettermans band, comes a candid, endearing, hilarious, and star-studded memoir of a life in-and love of-show business.

How does a kid go from a remote Canadian town at the tip of Lake Superior to the bright lights of Broadway and a gig leading the band on Letterman? This book is Paul Shaffers answer to that question. From playing seedy strip joints in Toronto, to his first legitimate job out of college-which found him working with future stars (and friends) Gilda Radner, Martin Short, and Eugene Levy-to being first musical director of the nascent Saturday Night Live and helping to form the Blues Brothers, to being onstage every night with Dave and playing with the greatest musicians of our time, Shaffer has lived the ultimate showbiz life.

Now, in this hilarious, entertaining, and candid memoir-in which he dishes on everyone from John Belushi and Jerry Lewis to Mel Gibson and Britney Spears-Paul gives us the full behind-the-scenes story of his life, from banging out pop tunes on the piano at the age of twelve to leading the band every night at the Sullivan Theater.

Paul Shaffer on his 'Letterman' years and The World's Most Dangerous Band

Paul Shaffer

In a recent phone interview, Shaffer spoke to Vanity Fair about the origins of the album, praised his high-profile collaborators, and delved into his back catalog to talk about his short-lived stint as a sitcom star, working with Bill Murray , Gilda Radner, and the Blues Brothers—and bringing back Artie Fufkin, of Spinal Tap fame. Vanity Fair: This is your first album in quite some time. What was the impetus to actually reenter the studio? So he offered to let me make this record; talk about an impetus. It was more like a lifesaver!

Shaffer has been with Letterman since the beginning, starting with the show's first incarnation, the riskier, arguably funnier Late Night with David Letterman , which aired on NBC from through , and continuing through CBS's Late Show with David Letterman , which ends its year run tonight. Combined, the shows have garnered 16 Emmy Awards and Emmy Award nominations. During this time, Shaffer has been not just one, but two aces up Letterman's sleeve, able to liven up the stage with both music and comedy. He's got an impeccable sense of timing, and riffing—whether it's on a joke or on the piano—is his forte. But, growing up, I always felt like I knew him. I had a habit of snooping through my pop's correspondence, and Paul was one of his buddies. Occasionally I'd find notes in progress to Paul, resting in the clutch of the typewriter.

It is best known for being David Letterman 's house band for 33 years. The fourth member of the 24th Street Band was keyboard player Clifford Carter. Shaffer was a regular attendee at their shows and had worked with Lee as a session musician. When it came time to create a band for Late Night , Shaffer simply recruited the three non-keyboard playing members of the 24th Street Band, in essence hiring a ready-made supporting band for himself. Bullock dropped out of the band around the end of Shaffer had met guitarist Sid McGinnis in ; McGinnis became a permanent member of the group, replacing Bullock, in Jordan was the second to exit, in , and was replaced by Anton Fig.
