Vroom with a View: In Search of Italys Dolce Vita on a 61 Vespa by Peter MooreIt was love at first sight--the Vespa had everything he wanted--a few dents and scratches, saddle seats and temperamental electrics. When Moore sat on it for the first time, he felt like a sharp-suited, Ray Ban wearing young Marcello Mastroianni. Riding the back roads, visiting small towns, sleeping in haylofts, Moore shows us an Italy rarely seen--from picnicking in the Italian Alps to rattling through cobbled hilltop towns to gate-crashing France Mayess villa. When Moores girlfriend, Sally, joins him for two weeks on the road, his fantasy is complete, summer in Italy on a Vespa with too much chrome and a pretty girl riding on the back. But it is Sophias delicate constitution we owe the greatest gratitude. Her need for constant pampering and frequent stops hypnotizes all those who gaze upon her. The locals, unaccustomed to foreign visitors, graciously invite Sopia (and Moore) into their homes, inns and restaurants to share their memories of their first Vespa; their first serious romance. Sophia forced Moore to slow down, gave him time to enjoy the simple beauty of Italy and its people--and let him experience Italys dolce vita.

La Vita 150: Gone, but definitely not forgotten
So many of you are still searching for information about this scooter that I decided to bring this post back from the archives. Needless to say, it has been changed since its original publication. A big reason sales did not meet expectations was surely the complete and total lack of marketing and dealer support by Hammerhead Offroad, the U. But in the case of the La Vita, it seemed they wanted it to fail. Many dealers listed on the now-defunct Web site had never heard of the La Vita. The dealer in Portland who sold two to actor Timothy Hutton he was in town filming the TV series Leverage seemed to think that was enough. I dunno, I have given up trying to decipher the thought processes that seem to dominate the U.

In Milan, Ferdinando Innocenti faced a similar problem with his steel tubing plant. Both men turned their focus to the personal transportation needs of fellow Italians. Legend has it that when Piaggio first saw the bike, he exclaimed "sembra una vespa! A short time later, Innocenti introduced a similar machine, named after the nearby Lambro River. Vespa and Lambretta became synonymous with scooters. To commemorate its 60th anniversary, Vespa introduced the new LX line Tuesday, two months after the European debut. It's the company's second model release in the U.
