Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny by Justin Hill

Another life-altering quest, another struggle between honor and lust for power, another generation of warriors forging alliances and enmities. The adventure, romance, and artistry of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon continues in this novelized companion to the first ever Netflix debut film, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny based on the novel by Wang Dulu.
Seventeen years after the legendary fighter Mubai dies protecting the world-conquering sword The Green Destiny, four great warriors are called together to guard the formidable weapon once more. The forces surrounding the sword irrevocably altered the life of Shulien, Mubai’s lover, but seventeen years later she is still honor-bound to defend the blade from the power-hungry warlord Hades Dai. The young fighters Wei-fang and Snow Vase, switched at birth, also have heritages and inheritances that inextricably link them to both each other and the fate of the sword. And Silent Wolf, Shulien’s former fiancé, returns from presumed death to thwart Hades Dai—and rekindle an emotionally isolated Shulien’s feelings.
Jam-packed with all the hallmarks of an epic adventure—sacrifice, battles, betrayal, vengeance, redemption, and destiny—this saga also explores the deeper meaning of true heroism and virtue. As Wei-fang and Snow Vase search for identity and forge their places in the world of warriors and heroes, Shu-lien and Silent Wolf struggle to reconcile both the traditions and heartbreak of the past with a fragile hope for the future.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny

Sword of Destiny , which arrives simultaneously in theaters and on Netflix this weekend, feels in every way like a knock-off. But rather than building on the foundation laid by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon , the new film chooses to replicate the exact same story beats of its predecessor while trying, and failing, to top its fight sequences with some ill-advised computer assistance. This is only where the flaws begin. Even though Sword of Destiny was released in China first and is clearly geared toward a global audience, its predominantly Chinese cast speaks English throughout, as opposed to the Mandarin of the original. The Glee cast member Harry Shum Jr.

From the director of Sense and Sensibility , this international co-production seemed like a film for the so-called prestige audience, in the vein of Ju Dou or Raise the Red Lantern. But at the minute mark it cut loose with dreamlike martial arts action to rouse even the most jaded of kung fu VHS traders. With its nuanced characters, epic mythology, gorgeous cinematography, breathless action, iconic score I can go on! The film advanced to suburban multiplexes, shattering and still holding box office records for a foreign language film in the United States. Indeed, it was a bigger deal in the west than in China, which may explain why its follow-up, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny , is shot in English. This does not explain, however, why it is so terrible. And like last time a thief in the night comes to yank it away.

It is also a sequel to the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. After eighteen years of solitude, renowned warrior-maiden Shu Lien emerges from retirement and travels to Peking , where the Green Destiny—the legendary sword of her deceased love Li Mu Bai—is located. In the forest, Shu Lien's carriage is attacked by several warriors from the West Lotus clan. As she fights them, a masked horseman comes to her aid, and together they defeat the attackers, revealing one's identity to be a young man called Wei Fang. As Dai approaches, she draws a sword and attempts to kill him, although he easily fights her off, and she flees. As Wei Fang makes his way through the forest, he is approached by a blind enchantress, who orders him to take her to Dai. She tells Dai that his great sword is surpassed by the Green Destiny, and prophesies that if he is to rule the Martial World, he must obtain the sword.
