The Golden Book of Favorite Songs by John W. BeattieWhen I was in grade school (or grammar school or elementary school or whatever) back in the 1950s, this was the book that our music teacher used. I once noted that my mother-in-law had a copy of this book, but she used it so I dared not ask for the volume! However, I recently checked to see if Amazon carried this work. To my delight, it was available.
The copy is worn, but that is of no moment. What is of moment is the material included in this volume.
For instance, I remember singing Stodola Pumpa, a Czech folk song. Seeing the words for this song brought a smile to my lips.
The book begins with patriotic songs (America, The Star Spangled Banner, America, the Beautiful, and Hail, Columbia). It also features a set of Civil War songs (such as Dixie, Tenting on the Old Camp Ground, The Battle Cry of Freedom, and When Johnnie Comes Marching Home). There is a set of Stephen Foster songs, well known religious songs (e.g., Holy, Holy, Holy, Onward, Christian Soldiers), Christmas sings, nursery rhymes (including Hey, Diddle Diddle, Little Bo-Peep), and so on it goes.
A wonderful trip to the past. . . .
