Agatha Christie: Crooked House. Three generations of a well-to-do family gather at a country house after the death of its patriarch in this misfiring adaptation of a postwar Agatha Christie novel. Among the suspects are the victim's eccentric sister-in-law Glenn Close , his spoiled young widow Christina Hendricks and his permanently sozzled daughter-in-law Gillian Anderson. The author rated Crooked House as one of her personal favourite works, but even she might struggle to solve the puzzle of how this version went so awry, its lumbering pace constantly hampered by reams of stilted exposition delivered lazily by an ensemble cast having a collective off-day. Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes had a hand in the screenplay, but there's none of the sparkling intrigue he brought to his own stately home murder mystery Gosford Park , while Gilles Paquet-Brenner's pedestrian direction gives the whole affair the feel of a hungover am-dram production.
Principal photography began in September , and the film aired in the UK on Channel 5 on 17 December The granddaughter of late Greek -British business tycoon Aristide Leonides, Sophia Leonides, visits private investigator Charles Hayward in his office. Sophia wants Charles to investigate Aristide's death, for she believes he was murdered by a member of his sprawling and idiosyncratic family. Sophia notes that Aristide' regular insulin injection had been laced with eserine from his eye drops, causing a fatal heart attack. Sophia believes this was deliberate, not accidental. Charles reluctantly takes on the case, in part because he had a brief love affair with Sophia in Cairo. Charles seeks the consent of Chief Inspector Taverner of Scotland Yard to look into the case, utilising his personal connection with Taverner, who had served with Charles's father, a decorated former Assistant Commissioner who was murdered.
