Without Reservations: The Travels of an Independent Woman by Alice SteinbachIn many ways, I was an independent woman, writes Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Alice Steinbach. “For years I’d made my own choices, paid my own bills, shoveled my own snow.” But somehow she had become dependent in quite another way. “I had fallen into the habit of defining myself in terms of who I was to other people and what they expected of me.” But who was she away from the people and things that defined her? In this exquisite book, Steinbach searches for the answer to this question in some of the most beautiful and exciting places in the world: Paris, where she finds a soul mate; Oxford, where she takes a course on the English village; and Milan, where she befriends a young woman about to be married.
Beautifully illustrated with postcards from Steinbach’s journeys, this revealing and witty book transports you into a fascinating inner and outer journey, an unforgettable voyage of discovery.

Although reviews are mixed, it's a "once-in-a-blue-moon" opportunity for some, so I'm charged with making reservations for our group of Anyone have any "tips" on how to make a reservation? I've spent an hour on the phone in an eternal loop pushing 4 to make a reservation for a group with over 10 but under 25 members. A "walk-up" in June can take about 2 hours standing in line just to get to the hostess.
For the main course, indulge in hearty items that include shrimp and grits, chicken pot pie, parmesan crusted catfish, roasted duck, New York strip steak, soft shell crab gumbo and fried chicken. Indulge in a dose of Southern hospitality with home cooked meals and big plates that will have you leaving full. Fried to perfection and served with paula's creamy chili sauce. We ate at the Lady and Sons at the lunch Thanksgiving Buffet because we are fans and we did not want to stand in long lines with kids and teens. We found out that for holidays reservations for the buffet at lunch are taken so that was our ticket. We made the reservation online and the restaurant called us back in November to confirm. They called us - what a surprise. I'm glad we went. Was it spectacular? No, just average.
