The Beautiful and Damned , first published by Scribner's in , is F. Scott Fitzgerald 's second novel. The work generally is considered to be based on Fitzgerald's relationship and marriage with his wife Zelda Fitzgerald. The Beautiful and Damned tells the story of Anthony Patch, a s socialite and presumptive heir to a tycoon's fortune, and his courtship and relationship with his wife Gloria Gilbert. It describes his brief service in the Army during World War I, the couple's post-war partying life in New York, and his later alcoholism. Toward the end of the novel, Fitzgerald summarizes the plot and his intentions in writing it, even referencing his own first novel, when a financially successful writer friend tells Anthony:.

His grandfather, who raised him, is beginning to pressure him to do something productive, and suggests that he write a book, but Anthony's life seems to be one enormous writers' block. He dreads having to sit down and come up with something to write, and most of his days are spent worrying about things from his beautiful bathtub in his ornate apartment. He is frightened of the big wide world and so prefers the safety and comfort of his bathroom, where he feels safe and sound. Dick Caramel, Anthony's room mate at Harvard, decides to introduce him to his cousin Gloria Gilbert, who is a society girl, and also somewhat of a hustler' she is beautiful, and uses her beauty to persuade men to pay for her meals.

Scott Fitzgerald continues his tradition of painting pictures of fallen castles, of psychological riches to rags, in a novel that joins his typical talent for description with a well-constructed plot. It introduces the reader to Anthony Patch, soon joined by wife Gloria, as he does nothing while waiting for something of meaning to arrive, never realizing that meaning had passed him by, in the end leaving him with nothing.
