All the Days and Nights: The Collected Stories by William Maxwell

It is rare for me to give a book of short stories 5 stars for the obvious reasons. Not every story is great, a few miss the mark entirely, and the rest fall somewhere in the middle. But in this case, EVERY SINGLE STORY was a mini masterpiece. A lot of them were about the same family, so there was continuity, and the settings were either in a small Illinois town just after WWI, or New York City in the 40s and 50s. Both induced nostalgia in me for times and places with no familiarity on my part. The last section of stories, which he calls Improvisations are 3-4 pages long, and read like fairy tales in which I could totally immerse myself.

I decided to take William Maxwells advice and did not read these straight through, but one story each day.
I think it is generally agreed that stories read better one at a time. They need air around them. And they need thinking about.
He was right.

He is right about a lot of things in his writing. So far, I have read one short novel They Came Like Swallows and this one, and he has a firm place at the top of my favorite authors list.

All the Days and Nights by Niven Govinden review – when art keeps death at bay

And all this time, where is John? Then, nothing. A hinterland of boarded-up warehouses and tenements, long since abandoned, that now shelter only hobos and the spoils of local crime, theft and drugs. Though you are several blocks away from the Hudson, its dank fills your nostrils. The unnumbered, untitled sections switch between her and him, present and past, imagination and memory, with no sure or certain rhythm. The language is plain, but oblique — falling across the characters and events rather like the light that Anna is so obsessed with capturing, that renders people and places at once obvious and ineffable. To the degree that the book is about art, however, it is undoubtedly romanticised.

The decision to portray this partnership at the moment when the husband and wife are torn asunder is an interesting one. Anna brown is a portraitist of repute enough for her work to have graced the front of The New York Times. She has painted her husband John every single day of their long life together. The subject of the portrait Anna now labours over is of a third figure, one who typifies the new consumer-led, money-making ethos of the age — her dealer Ben, the fragrantly moisturised, bespoke-suited New York gallery owner who exhibits and sells her work. Allmusic editor Andy Kellman found the album "brilliantly put together" and declared it "one of 's best debuts. And thats a good sound to hear in the hands of one so obviously gifted in music and song. With the exception of a few notable tracks within the record, the rest of the album is fair in its delivery. His sultry soul emotion reveals his Bee Gees head voice in all its dramatic splendor. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. For other uses, see Days and Nights disambiguation.
