Haunting in nature, most of the tales and folklores grace the halls of provinces and rural areas most especially on a Halloween season. As an archipelago, the Philippines indeed boast of its variety of stories spooky and terrifying. Each community, barrio, barangay, locality, city, province and region has its own story passed on from generation to generation. Even tourists from around the world have heard the story of the vicious soul-sucking creature roaming the streets at night hoping to prey on a vulnerable piece of flesh waiting for his demise. But some of the interesting lores and stories have failed to meet the ears of the city people.

Monsters and heroes are the usual building blocks of long, yet enduring tales and legends. The glory and triumphs of the brave and the bold against the creatures that defy even the most elaborate nightmares are what lures us to these narratives and into the struggles and battles that ensue.

Through ancient times, waves of different people have settled on the islands, bringing their culture with them. The earliest settlers of Philippines, the Melanesian and Austronesian people, traded extensively with China, Japan, India, and the Middle East, hence, you will find that the legends from these places have blended into the traditional lore. In the 16 th and 17 th century, it was governed by the Spanish, from Spain and Mexico, so you will also find Spanish and Hispanic influences.

Philippine mythical creatures are the mythical beasts, monsters, and enchanted beings of more than ethnic groups in the Philippines. Each ethnic people has their own unique set of belief systems, which includes the belief in various mythical creatures. Due to this, there has been around recorded different mythical creatures in Philippine mythology, each belonging to specific belief systems of certain ethnic peoples. Although the number may be expanded into around a thousand, as the mythical creatures of more than a hundred ethnic groups in the country have yet to be recorded and published by scholars. There are also some mythical creatures in Philippine mythology that have been imported or altered due to colonialism and globalization, nonetheless, majority have retained their indigenous beliefs rooted in folklore.
