The Holy Family: Jesus, Mary and Joseph by Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary

This book, pre-Vatican II, sets forth the presence and position of family in Gods scheme. Particularly as represented by the Holy Family. It is unapologetically orthodox in presentation and direct. It sets forth the age-old beliefs in the three persons in the Holy Family and the importance of both the Holy Family, and families generally, in Gods plan.

It also discusses the importance of each person in the Holy Family, individually, and how they relate to the plan of salvation, and how it has been reviewed and perceived by many holy men and women through the ages.

A good read, especially in the Christmas season. It is also refreshing to read about the importance of family in this time when peoples roles in society are being deliberately confused.

Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph

From Bethlehem to Calvary obedience was His companion. Whom did He obey? Yes, the God to whom the angels are subject … was subject to Mary, and not only to Mary, but also to Joseph. For God to obey a woman is humility without parallel…. Learn then, man, to obey; learn, O earth, to be submissive.

Dec 26, Homily. In those days Hannah conceived, and at the end of her term bore a son whom she called Samuel, since she had asked the Lord for him. As you live, my lord, I am the woman who stood near you here, praying to the Lord. I prayed for this child, and the Lord granted my request. Now I, in turn, give him to the Lord; as long as he lives, he shall be dedicated to the Lord. And so we are.

Bible Today's Readings. Bishop Anthony B. Taylor preached the following homily in Ponca City, Okla. One of the most beautiful miracles that I am privileged to witness is when a couple turns into a family on the occasion of the birth of their first child or when they adopt their first children. You are now not just husband and wife, but also father and mother, and this transition to parenthood produces in you virtues that no one knew you had and draws on instincts that surprise even you as a couple. I had never thought of my sisters as especially courageous until I saw each of them the day they gave birth.

The older I get the more appreciative I become of my now deceased parents and how much I value the opportunity of having grown up within a particular family, with a certain structure, but most importantly clear values and expectations. We were raised with the expectation that we would work hard to succeed in education and eventually in some professional work, but equally there was the overriding sense of responsibility before God. As we celebrate the Solemnity of the Holy Family the scriptures remind us of our twofold status as members of particular families as well as members of the family and household of God.

It is one of the greatest love stories ever told. A love that survives the flight to Egypt, the hardships of survival in a foreign country, the task of raising and educating a young boy, and the many problems that are unwittingly provoked by Jesus because of who he is. Language is like currency. There must be a common understanding of its value for it to function as an effective means of exchange. When that common agreement deteriorates, wages, prices, and costs cut anchor, and economies drift. Similarly, a word can drop in value, suffer inflation, or entirely lose its meaning when a language group loses a common understanding of its meaning. She holds up what has always been. She offers her faithful the model of what family life should be. Reflections on the Holy Family presuppose a lack of ambiguity on what the word family means.

Bible Today's Readings. Mary and Joseph sacrificed greatly to make the arduous journey to Bethlehem, to obey God's directive to flee into Egypt, and to go to Nazareth to raise Jesus. Ambiguity, uncertainty, and brokenness touched the Holy Family. Their lives teach us that we cannot understand God's designs. This wonderful lesson urges parents to put their families in God's hands and trust that their efforts will bear fruit. Faithful parents are examples for us, single or married. We, too, are to put ourselves in God's hands.

The Feast of the Holy Family celebrates the human family unit, as well as the ultimate family unit: Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. The feast, not a solemnity, is usually celebrated on the Sunday after Christmas. If Christmas is a Sunday, then the feast is celebrated on December 30th. We know very little about the life of the Holy Family through the canonical Gospels. They speak of the early years of the Holy Family, including the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem, the flight into Egypt, and the finding of Jesus in the temple. Various non-canonical works, including the Infancy Gospel of Thomas , try to fill in the blanks.

  1. The Feast of the Holy Family is a liturgical celebration in the Catholic Church in honor of Jesus, his mother, and his legal father, Saint Joseph, as a family.

  2. On this day for the last time in the cycle of the liturgical year, the Church invites us to contemplate the mystery of Jesus' humble, hidden life.
