Back to the Bar: Blue in the Frog Face
At least once each semester the inevitable happens; we wind up being without a guest speaker. Yet such challenge is actually welcome in the Midwest Entrepreneurs class; as long as it happens but once or twice a semester… It gives me the chance to reinforce one of the most important general things that business students can learn: The need to adapt to changing circumstances and the need to be persistently ready to do so. Taffer and his crew of expert bartenders, chefs, and designers is brought in by bar owners—entrepreneurs—to save their declining and often severly neglected and dysfunctionally run businesses. Below, class blogger Austin Johnson summarizes what takes place in the episode as well as what we can learn from it. As you will see, an extra challenge for this particular entrepreneurial business is the very unique layout of the facility and the property it sits on; coupled with dual and potentially clashing target market segments. This bar has been in Anoka, Minnesota since , so it had been a successful bar for a long time. They both thought this would be a good business decision.

Bar Rescue - Boulder Lodge Bar & Grill (Mac and Chester's ...
It stars Jon Taffer a long-time food and beverage industry consultant specializing in nightclubs and pubs , who offers his professional expertise, access to service industry experts, and renovations and equipment to desperately failing bars in order to save them from closing. It is commonly believed that Taffer takes a percentage of the businesses he rescues, however this is untrue. All renovations and improvements are paid for by sponsors with no cost to the businesses. Additionally, the businesses featured on Bar Rescue are under no obligation to follow any of the rescue protocols or keep any of the changes. Throughout the show's history, multiple bars have restored their original name or motif after filming wraps.
The feud has literally split the bar in half. Taffer is well known for rebranding bars that he rescues, and in most cases that rebranding includes a name change. You can check out the Boulder Lodge website for news, updates, and menu info. The bar also has a fairly active Facebook page that appears to indicate the bar is doing well since the rescue. We usually like to include a taste of public reviews as part of our Bar Rescue episode preview, but in this case, only a few outdated reviews were available, so we decided to take a pass.
