Prone to Wander: Prayers of Confession and Celebration by Barbara R. Duguid

Confessing our sins might seem like a gloomy business—God already knows about them, so whats the point of dwelling on failure? But confession is more celebratory than we think. It does not simply remind us of our guilt, but points us to our great Savior, who has atoned for us and lovingly pursues us despite our wandering.

These prayers open with a scriptural call of confession, confess specific sins, thank the Father for Jesus perfect life and death in our place, ask for the help of the Spirit in pursuing holiness, and close with an assurance of pardon.

Inspired by the Puritan classic The Valley of Vision, these prayers were developed for both personal devotions and church use

Prayer And Confession For Living + Ps Chris Oyakhilome

Sometimes, O God, we forget people, or we toss them aside — the difficult ones, the needy ones, the ones that are hard to spend time with, the ones who confront us. We are uncomfortable, or we feel guilty, or we follow brighter, shinier people, or we worry about what will make us look good. We are in such desperate need of your forgiveness.

Prayers of Confession and Assurance

With that in mind, I will be offering some helps over the summer in various forms, to guide you in your adoration of, and intercession with God, starting with the prayer of confession below which is my adaptation of a Puritan prayer from the seventeenth century, that you can read and recite as the Spirit leads you. May God establish within our hearts a deep-seated trust in his goodness and providence, and stir within our souls a passion to pursue him relentlessly. O God of Grace, Our Father, I come to you now in desperate need of your forgiveness and tender mercies. I have been hasty and short in my private prayer; I have been quick to rely on my own strength and planning; I have subtly moved you to the periphery. Awaken my heart to lament this folly; to bewail this lack of understanding of you and of myself. My first sin of the day, my insistence on autonomy, leads to many others: the neglect of those around me who are in need; the presumption that I am justified in my thoughts and actions; a lack of love for my neighbor; and worst of all, a lack of love for you.

Healing and wholeness go together, because broken lives are made whole though the love and grace of God. Healing is a recurring theme throughout Scripture, and the Apostles and early Church knew well the power in prayer to bring healing, wholeness and peace into lives.

This problem actually touches every part of corporate worship. Not everyone who sings songs of praise has his or her heart, mind, and will engaged in praise. Not all who speak the Lord's Prayer "mean it" in the moment. And though worshipers' body language may give us some clues about whether they really mean it, we never know with certainty. Some who appear less engaged may actually be deeply engaged. Others who participate vigorously may be more caught up with the music or beauty of the language than the act or worship itself.
