Hey Sega! This ‘Sonic 3 & Knuckles’ iOS Port Needs to Happen
The recently announced Sonic Mania is a throwback of the Sonic games from the early s. However, it is also going back to the series at its very best. For once, the Sonic the Hedgehog fanbase that has been languishing for a return to form is excited for a new Sonic game. Well, if you notice the giant rings leading to special stages and the roster of playable characters, the game in question is obvious. In the age of Grunge Rock and fanny packs, the Blue Blur starred in new games every year, each one greater and better than the last. Sega fans looked to the speedy gameplay and elaborate levels of Sonic games as prime examples of the superiority of their chosen console. It would become their masterpiece.
Anyone who enjoys old-school games will most likely have experienced the crushing disappointment of finding a favorite title in the App Store — only to discover that whichever company ported the game to iOS took no care whatsoever in doing so. Fortunately, one game series you could absolutely never throw that accusation at is the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise , thanks to the remastering efforts of fans Christian Whitehead and Simon Thomley. For anyone interested in game restoration and porting, their story is kind of inspirational. Having seen the first stab at bringing the Sonic titles to iOS, and witnessed the sound problems, awful virtual controls, windowed play area and slowdown issues, they created their own ports and posted the videos online. Sega took notice, released the remastered editions, and they became iOS best-sellers. I love the sega megadrive and genesis games but this stinks not gameplay wise but the fact that all of the ads come after every single act. Fans of the speedy blue mammal will be impressed with the authenticity of Sonic The Hedgehog 4, which retains the look and feel of those great Genesis games of old.
