Although this is now France, at the time in question is was in the nominally independent County of Foix. Being out-of-the-way, the village and its surroundings had been bypassed by the great events of the 13th Century; in particular it had been missed by the Albigensian Crusade. As a result, about half the village subscribed to the Cathar heresy. However a series of events brought that to an end.
