Quick Facts

Born and raised in a Hindu family in coastal Gujarat , western India , and trained in law at the Inner Temple , London, Gandhi first employed nonviolent civil disobedience as an expatriate lawyer in South Africa, in the resident Indian community's struggle for civil rights. After his return to India in , he set about organising peasants, farmers, and urban labourers to protest against excessive land-tax and discrimination. Assuming leadership of the Indian National Congress in , Gandhi led nationwide campaigns for various social causes and for achieving Swaraj or self-rule. He was imprisoned for many years, upon many occasions, in both South Africa and India. He lived modestly in a self-sufficient residential community and wore the traditional Indian dhoti and shawl, woven with yarn hand-spun on a charkha. He ate simple vegetarian food, and also undertook long fasts as a means of both self-purification and political protest.

When Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on January 30, , he was already a legend. He showed the world that social and political changes can be achieved not only through violence and terror, but also through love and compassion. The tradition of nonviolence ahimsa plays an important role in the Indian culture - and its religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. Tolerance for other religions, and a vegetarian diet forms an integral part of their lives. Predominantly, Gandhi tried to realize and eradicate his own shortcomings on his path to self-transformation. He tried to meet all living beings and creations of nature with great respect and humility.

After Partition in , he continued to work toward peace between Hindus and Muslims. Gandhi was shot to death in Delhi in January by a Hindu fundamentalist. His father was the dewan chief minister of Porbandar; his deeply religious mother was a devoted practitioner of Vaishnavism worship of the Hindu god Vishnu , influenced by Jainism, an ascetic religion governed by tenets of self-discipline and nonviolence. Upon returning to India in mid, he set up a law practice in Bombay, but met with little success. He soon accepted a position with an Indian firm that sent him to its office in South Africa.
