They were also goddesses of knowledge, who remembered all things that had come to pass. Later the Mousai were assigned specific artistic spheres: Kalliope Calliope , epic poetry; Kleio Clio , history; Ourania Urania , astronomy; Thaleia Thalia , comedy; Melpomene, tragedy; Polymnia Polyhymnia , religious hymns; Erato, erotic poetry; Euterpe, lyric poetry; and Terpsikhore Terpsichore , choral song and dance.

The Muses: Nine Goddesses From Greek Mythology

The Muses were the Greek goddesses of poetic inspiration, the adored deities of song, dance, and memory, on whose mercy the creativity, wisdom and insight of all artists and thinkers depended. They may have been originally three in number, but, according to Hesiod and the prevailing tradition he established, most commonly they are depicted as the nine daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne. Hesiod says that the Muses were daughters of Zeus and the Titaness Mnemosyne , the Goddess of Memory; most authors seem to agree with him. However, two ancient lyric poets, claim otherwise: according to Theognis, their father was indeed Zeus , but their mother was actually Harmonia , while according to Alcman, the Muses were, in fact, daughters of Uranus and Gaea. Some later authors have even tried to reconcile the stories, proposing two different generations of Muses. Most commonly, it was thought that the Muses were born in Pieria at the foot of Mount Olympus , so they were often called either Olympian or Pierian Muses. Depending on the region where they were celebrated, both the names and the number of Muses varied.

In ancient Greek religion and mythology, the Muses (Ancient Greek: Μοῦσαι, Moũsai) are the inspirational goddesses of literature, science, and the arts. They are considered the source of the knowledge embodied in the poetry, usage, " muse" can refer in general to a person who inspires an artist, musician, or writer.

Forgotten is Valley of The Muses, Plataea, Marathon. See:

Nine months later were born the nine Muses at the foot of Mount Olympus. They are companions of the Graces, sitting near the throne of Zeus and singing of his greatness, of the world, and of the deeds of the heroes. Primarily, they promote the arts and sciences; they inspire artists, poets, philosophers, and musicians. The Muses also sang at the wedding of Cadmus and Harmonia, the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, and at the funeral of Achilles. The few stories of those who dared compete with the Muses end in disaster for the challengers: Thamyris, the minstrel who lost his minstrelsy and his eyes ; the Sirens who had their feathers plucked out ; and the daughters of the King and Queen of Macedonia named after the Muses, they were turned into birds. King Pyreneus of Daulis attempted to seduce the Muses and was led to his death by jumping after them off the top of a tower.

They are considered the source of the knowledge embodied in the poetry , lyric songs , and myths that were related orally for centuries in these ancient cultures. In current English usage, "muse" can refer in general to a person who inspires an artist, musician, or writer. Beekes rejects both etymologies and suggests a Pre-Greek origin. The earliest known records of the Nine Muses are from Boeotia , the homeland of Hesiod. Some ancient authorities thought that the Nine Muses were of Thracian origin. Writers similarly disagree also concerning the number of the Muses; for some say that there are three, and others that there are nine, but the number nine has prevailed since it rests upon the authority of the most distinguished men, such as Homer and Hesiod and others like them.
