Jerry Lewis in Person by Jerry Lewis

It all started with Dean Martin... this book, in a way, and my fascination with Martin and Lewis, Jerry Lewis and now Dean Martin. Along the way I became curious about Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Marilyn Monroe and The Les Brown Orchestra, Count Basie and other big bands.

But prior to this book, I had read Dean and Me, a Love Story, by Jerry Lewis and James Kaplan, which made me very curious about Dean and Jerry. But, much of what is in that book is also covered by Jerry Lewis in Person. If I were to choose between these two books, Id say read Dean and Me. I read it and cried at the end even though you know whats coming.

This book covered their career, Jerrys early life, born to a pair of show biz vaudevillian parents who left him with his grandmother or other relatives much of the time while they traveled the Borscht circuit. This led to a lifelong anxiety about being alone, and left behind.

An interesting look at the comedian, what makes him tick, what made them so great together. He also professes his love for Dean Martin in both these books, and it feels real.

Jerry Lewis Once Claimed He Had an Affair With Marilyn Monroe

Legendary comedian Jerry Lewis, who died Sunday at 91 , was never shy about his wild years as a Hollywood superstar. And in one outrageous anecdote, he claimed he once had an affair with one of the most famous blonde bombshells in history: Marilyn Monroe. In a interview with GQ , Lewis at first wouldn't name names about who he was romantic with during his day, but at the same time insisted Monroe never had that rumored affair with President Kennedy. When the author expressed skepticism, Lewis admitted he indeed did have an affair with Monroe. And the only reason I know is because I did. He nods, adding that Monroe used sex like he uses humor: to make an emotional connection.

At 90 years old, the comedy legend was giving what would prove to be his final interview. The result was an excruciating seven-minute film in which he barks monosyllabic answers at an increasingly nervous journalist. Jerry, who died from natural causes on Sunday aged 91, was known to millions for his long-time acting partnership with Dean Martin. He was also famed for his life-long telethon fundraisers in aid of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. But the entertainer, who had previously suffered prostate cancer, pulmonary fibrosis and heart disease, had always been a man of two sides.

He told me he would live to be , just to "beat George Burns. Instead, I looked back fondly on an interview unlike any other I've conducted. By any definition, it was a marathon: 11 hours over two days, with barely a break for an orange soda and a cheese steak. Jerry Lewis liked to talk—about himself, sure, but also about more general topics as they applied to him: money, lust, celebrity, vulnerability. And he'd cleared his calendar for me.
