Ruth etc. The name is derived from a root signifying sweetness or pleasantness. Naomi left Judea with her husband and two sons, in a time of famine and went to the land of Moab. Here her husband and sons died; and on her return to Bethlehem she wished to be known as Mara, bitterness , instead of Naomi, sweetness. See RUTH. She went with her husband to the land of Moab, and after his death returned to Bethlehem. She was the Venus, but sometimes the Diana, of the Romans.

According to the biblical Book of Ruth, Ruth was a Moabite woman who married into an Israelite family and eventually converted to Judaism. She is the great-grandmother of King David and hence an ancestor of the Messiah. Ruth's story begins when an Israelite woman, named Naomi, and her husband, Elimelech, leave their hometown of Bethlehem. Israel is suffering from famine and they decide to relocate to the nearby nation of Moab. After ten years of marriage, both of Naomi's sons die of unknown causes and she decides that it is time to return to her homeland of Israel. The famine has subsided and she no longer has immediate family in Moab.

Who was Naomi in the Bible story?

Naomi's Story

Map showing the location of Moab and Bethlehem — the journey taken by Naomi and Ruth. She seems to have inherited nothing, no land or goods, and her only option was to return to her native village, where she owned a little piece of land. She told her two daughters-in-law, Orpah and Ruth , of her decision and prepared to bid them good-bye. Neither of them wanted to leave her, which says a lot about Naomi as a mother-in-law , but Naomi insisted, and one of them, Orpah, finally agreed to go home to her birth family. The other young woman, however, was made of sterner stuff. She would not leave Naomi, and that was that. This is significant.

H ere is a Bible study on the character of Naomi from the Book of Ruth. In the days of Ancient Israel, before the time of Christ, it was considered to be a blessing from God if you had a large family and even in Jesus day, if a couple was childless, the Jews considered them as being under some sort of curse due to some sin in the family. The Jews believed that God commanded them to be fruitful and multiply so this was expected of every Jewish family and if there were no children in the family then God had, in their minds, obviously placed that family under some sort of curse because of their sin so with this background in the cultural belief system of the Jews we begin the story of Naomi taken from the Book of Ruth. Can you picture how much shame she felt and the Jews must have judged her by these tragedies. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there will I be buried.

What does the Bible say about? In the days when the judges ruled there was a famine in the land, and a man of Bethlehem in Judah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he and his wife and his two sons. The name of the man was Elimelech and the name of his wife Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion. They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem in Judah. They went into the country of Moab and remained there. But Elimelech, the husband of Naomi, died, and she was left with her two sons.
