Over the course of six seasons, we were privy to well-mannered bickerments and soapy melodrama elevated by 20th-century British aristocracy and decadent opulence. It was a time when relief and tragedy were delivered by way of telegram and social status was determined by whether one lives above or below the staircase. Secrets and scandals simmered beneath a glossy surface. And splendor was found at every lavish bazaar, ball, and fox hunt. The women were as proper as they were cutthroat, and the men as dutiful as they were abhorrent. The sprawling cast of characters and their mini and mega dramas made us laugh, cry, and raise an eyebrow or two. We watched as our favorites fell prey to vicious sibling rivalries, plotting servants, and casualties of war, all between ritual tea times and the poshest events.
This product has been a real joy to me. Excellent for all to enjoy! This is not the only series I have purchased through Walmart and possibly not the last. I bought it for my wife. I looked at part of it and the image was very good on the TV screen. The price was right.

The first series of Downton Abbey comprises 7 episodes, and was broadcast in the UK on 26 September , and explored the lives of the Crawley family and their servants from the day after the sinking of the RMS Titanic in April to the outbreak of the First World War on 4 August The first series is focused on the need for a male heir to the Grantham estate, and the troubled love life of Lady Mary as she attempts to find a suitable husband. The device that sets the drama in motion is the fee tail or "entail" governing the fictional Earldom of Grantham, endowing both title and estate exclusively to heirs male and complicated by the dire financial state of the estate, the latter only resolved when the earl—then the heir apparent —married an American heiress. As a condition of the marriage contract, her considerable fortune was contractually incorporated into the comital entail in perpetuity. The earl and countess, who have three daughters and no son, arranged for their eldest daughter to marry her cousin, son of the then- heir presumptive. The demise of both heirs in the sinking of the Titanic destroys the plans and brings into play a distant male cousin, Matthew Crawley, a solicitor from Manchester , as heir presumptive to Downton and the countess's fortune.
