Renee Kurilla (Illustrator of Zebrafish)

Im an illustrator of many books for kids including ORANGUTANKA: A STORY IN POEMS by Margarita Engle (Holt), THE PICKWICKS PICNIC by Carol Brendler (Clarion, Fall 17), and the ADA LACE series by Emily Calandrelli (Simon & Schuster, Fall 17).

I love drawing nature, animals, and working on projects that require a little bit of research!

Before transitioning to a full time freelance career, I was a lead artist at FableVision Studios for nearly 10 years. My work there has contributed to multiple honors, including the graphic novel Zebrafish (2008), a Junior Library Guild selection, and the Ranger Ricks Tree House App for the National Wildlife Federation, which won a 2013 Parents Choice Award!

I currently live just south of Boston with my illustrator husband Keith Zoo, our fluffy orange cat Timmy, and our latest addition -- daughter Zoey!

And unfortunately, being a print subscriber does not give you access to the app as they are totally separate properties. In fact, Ranger Rick himself, the iconic cartoon raccoon, makes no sound at all when he appears. I also like that tricky words in the text are highlighted so kids only have to click for a short definition. There are games here too, like Who am I? And the Video section is set up to look like you are in the movie theater watching one of three short clips about animals.

Last week, I reviewed Ranger Rick Jr. Appventures: Lions , an educational app filled with surprising facts and fun activities to learn more about lion. It was also one of the two iPad apps released by the National Wildlife Federation to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Ranger Rick, a popular children's nature magazine in the US.
